Mammoth Lakes, CA // Spontaneous Spring Skiing
Due to my producer-y nature I'm a hardcore planner who loves to book ahead (I'm already looking at Thanksgiving flights), so this spontaneity was very unusual for me - but boy am I glad I stepped out of my comfort zone! Poor Rahim had to work til 5am on Thursday and when he sleepily asked me if we could go to Mammoth this weekend (after much convincing and promising that Watson could come) we decided to take a quick trip up to the mountains.
Last minute options were tight (do not recommend this), so we decided to go ham and booked at the Westin Monache Resort literally a staircase away from the Gondola. We actually booked this through Mammoth Reservations so that we could get a pet friendly condo within the Westin, and I'd say it was an amazing success. The condo was clean and modern, the bed was huge and comfy, there was an adorable balcony overlooking the pool/jacuzzi/mountains and a fireplace, we had 2 parking spots if we needed them and best of all: they were having free wine between 4-5:15pm! The best part seriously was the proximity to the mountain though - we just walked down the stairs to go to the gondola up to Canyon. For a skier (even though my boots are pretty comfortable) this was a godsend.
On Saturday we had an early day on the mountain that was pretty fantastic considering how warm it was! We were able to make it all the way to the top with no white out conditions which was a welcome change from our January trip. For the first time in a long time I was with more skiers than snowboarders - ha! Lunch and apres-ski beers were both had at the Canyon Lodge so we could easily gondola back down and head back to our heaven of a condo to rest.
Coordinating dinner with 12 people is always a cluster*$@! so we ended up ordering pizza from Nik-nWillies. Everything was delicious and they wrote a thank you note on the pizza box! Before that was decided, Rahim and I took a walk through the Village and stopped for a drink and some guac at Gomez' (have to stave off the hanger, yo). It's got an enormous selection of tequila if you're into that sort of thing ;). One of my favorite finds in the Village was the General Store. Albeit pricey, this place has adorable gift items and delicious food (cheese, crackers, meat, candy, you name it!). I ended up coming back here twice for random things I needed and will definitely be going back.
This was a quick trip so we pretty much just hit the road, stopped at Mahogany Smoked Meats of course and hustled on home. When we woke up Sunday it was mid-50s in Mammoth so I definitely got a taste of that Spring/Summer lifestyle - and me likey!
Off to shred some more gnar,
